| Shimla |
| |
Simla, is the capital city of Himachal Pradesh. In 1864, Shimla was declared the summer capital of the British Raj in India. A popular tourist destination, Shimla is often referred to as the "Queen of Hills" (a term coined by the British). It is a beautiful hill town in the lap of nature, surrounded by pine and deodar forests. Temperature is ideal in summers. Shimla, which is situated on a central ridge with peaks, seven in all, towering over it, has all of that old world charms that one can think of. The numerous Edwardian structures built by the different British Viceroys still stand strong. The old churches are particularly interesting because of the structure and the beautiful stained glasses. Although Shimla has lost some of its sheen over the years, it still has enough charm to captivate a visitor.
